How a baptism theme gets chosen

The theme is the first decision of a baptism and the one that shapes all the rest: palette, candle, candy bar, favours, even the mood of the photographs. That is why we never pick it from a catalogue. We look for it in a meeting, with questions about the child and about how the family pictures the day.

Three routes, three real baptisms

The fairy tale, literally. At Emily's baptism the theme was Cinderella: a gold carriage, "Once upon a time" above the candy bar, pink and blue balloons around the castle. A bold theme, worked in a soft palette so it stays tender rather than turning into a production.

The thing she will grow into. For Vasiliki, at Olympico in Rio, the theme was the ballerina: wooden figures in pink tutus on the palm trees, cupcakes topped with gold pointe shoes, a wish book with a ballerina on the cover. Beside the sea, pink in conversation with blue.

The family's own place. At Melina's baptism, in summer right beside the water, the sea itself became the theme. When a venue has that much character, the styling does not need to shout, only to frame it.

The one test that never changes
